Prof S. Vreugde is Research Director for the Department of Otolaryngology at The University of Adelaide since July 2011. Prof Vreugde graduated with Highest Distinction as a Medical Doctor from the Brussels University (VUB) in Belgium. She subsequently specialized in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck surgery at the same university. She then obtained her PhD in molecular biology (Tel Aviv University, Israel, Laboratory of Prof. K. Avraham) in 2002 and did a post-doc at the DIBIT research center in Milan. From 2008 to 2011, she was employed in the European Patent Office (The Hague, The Netherlands), where she was analysing patent applications in the Department of Biotechnology.
Her research focuses mainly on the pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis and wound healing, aimed at the identification and development of novel therapies to the benefit of patients. She has published >200 manuscripts, many of those in high impact journals in her field of research.
