Introduction and description

  • Debridement Skills for Wound care – practical and theory.
  • Biopsy – Where, When and How (including the importance of the clinical relationship and communication with pathology to improve the clinical pathological correlation. 

Workshop purpose

  • To familiarise and encourage the use of biopsy and appropriate debridement skills in wound assessment and management.   
  • To ensure that biopsies are taken in the right way, from the correct part of the wound, and presented to the pathologist in the best condition.   
  • Maximising the information retrieved from pathology for the treating team, bringing the pathologist to the fore with wound and clinical diagnosis of lesions and wounds. 

Key learning objectives

  • Biopsy – Teach punch biopsy and elliptical/rectangular biopsy, tissue handling. 
  • Encourage the use of biopsy as an essential clinical step for wounds that have not responded to standard care within an appropriate time frame. 
  • Be familiar with types of Debridement, use of appropriate tools and scope of practice.

Prior Knowledge and if any criteria of the participant to enrol

Must be advanced Nursing/Clinicians working regularly with Wound Management. At least 3-5 years post grad experience with wounds and preferably a minimum of a post Grad cert in or including Wound Care.
