The challenges of achieving optimal pressure injury prevention in a modern hospital ecosystem

Synopsis

Achieving optimal pressure injury prevention in our healthcare system is challenged by systemic stressors, including limited access to appropriate equipment and complex equipment fleets. These constraints increase the time and resources required to manage patient risk effectively. High workloads and competing priorities contribute to decision fatigue and stress, potentially delaying critical actions and leading to missed opportunities to prevent harm.

Health services operate as complex ecosystems in which people, processes, technologies, and environments are interdependent. When this ecosystem is under strain, its capacity to support reliable prevention practices is reduced. Exploring pressure injury prevention through an ecosystem lens may help clarify how environmental factors impact patient care.
